Cricket is hitting the big time again! The International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board just gave the green light on April 9 for both men’s and women’s cricket to return to the Olympics at LA 2028. Each event will feature six teams, with 90 spots split evenly between men and women. That means every country gets to send a 15-player squad to battle it out.
The game plan? T20 Internationals, the fast and furious version of cricket, will be the format. Where’s it all happening? That’s still up in the air, but New York’s name is floating around as a possible host.
Now, here’s the tricky bit: nobody’s figured out how to pick the six teams yet. And what about Great Britain and the West Indies? Their line-ups are still a puzzle waiting to be solved.
Cricket hasn’t been in the Olympics since way back in 1900, when Great Britain beat France in a two-day showdown to snag the only Olympic cricket gold ever awarded. Just two teams played that time—talk about a small party!
Lately, though, cricket’s been popping up at other big events. The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games had both men’s and women’s tournaments, and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games showcased an eight-team women’s competition. So, LA 2028 is shaping up to be cricket’s next big moment on the world stage. Get ready—things are about to get smashing!
