Rohit Sharma Sets Unwanted Record After Another Batting Flop vs DC

Rohit Sharma’s struggles with the bat continued on Sunday as Mumbai Indians took on Delhi Capitals in a high-scoring IPL clash. The former MI skipper fell cheaply again, managing just 18 off 12 balls before getting trapped lbw while attempting a sweep.

This latest failure added to a worrying trend for the veteran opener. Since the start of IPL 2023, Rohit has averaged only 24.39 in 33 innings—second-worst among regular openers (minimum 25 innings). Only Wriddhiman Saha has fared worse, averaging 20.28 over the same period. This season has been particularly rough. Rohit has scored just 56 runs so far, averaging a lowly 11.20.

Rohit started well on the day, slamming two fours and a six and getting the better of Mitchell Starc early on. But his departure created a void that MI needed others to fill—and they did.

Rohit’s exit brought Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma at the crease, and they tried to rebuild the innings. The duo rotated strike nicely and took their time, adding 50 runs in just 29 deliveries. Surya spearheaded the assault and blasted Mohit Sharma for 14 runs in his first over and six off the next. After their dismissals, Naman Dhir came in and finished strong. His unbeaten 38 off 17 balls helped MI reach a competitive 205/5.

Despite Rohit’s form slump, MI’s batting depth showed up when it mattered. But the team—and fans—will be hoping their star opener finds his rhythm before it’s too late.
