Dhoni Skips All-Time XI, Chooses 4 Indian Greats Instead

MS Dhoni isn’t big on fantasy teams. So when asked to name his all-time XI in a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, the former India captain didn’t take the bait. Instead, he gave a straight-up answer: he doesn’t believe in picking all-time XIs.

But after a little nudge, Dhoni did give fans something to chew on—he named four Indian cricket icons he’d love to see on the field together, all in their prime.

“Viru pa (Virender Sehwag) opening, then Sachin, Dada (Sourav Ganguly),” Dhoni said. And of course, Yuvraj Singh made the cut too.

He explained why he chose them: “When you see them in their prime, it felt like no one could be better. We all grew up watching them dominate.”

Dhoni also recalled one unforgettable moment—Yuvraj’s six sixes in the 2007 T20 World Cup match against England in Durban. Dhoni was at the non-striker’s end when it happened. “When Yuvi was hitting six sixes, you didn’t want to watch anyone else,” he said.

But even with those picks, Dhoni stood firm on why he never makes full XI lists. “So many performances weren’t captured back then. There are generations I haven’t seen play. But the players we did see? At their peak—mind blowing.”

Dhoni, now 43, retired from international cricket in 2020. His final game in India colors was the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. He still plays in the IPL, leading Chennai Super Kings and keeping fans hooked year after year.
