Vinod Kambli to Get Rs 30,000 Monthly Support, Courtesy Sunil Gavaskar

Vinod Kambli, a once-promising Indian cricketer, is now struggling with health and money. But an old ally from the world of cricket has come to give him a hand — Sunil Gavaskar.

It is heartening to see the former India captain step up and help Kambli, who has been secretly fighting a personal battle over the past few years. Gavaskar signed on to help Kambli with financial support as part of his own CHAMPS Foundation, which will provide the former player Rs 30,000 a month. Furthermore, medical expenses will be taken care of up to Rs 30,000 per year by the foundation.

There’s been serious health concerns for Kambli, 52, lately. He was admitted to Akruti Hospital in Thane in December 2024 with a urinary infection and severe cramps. His financial health has also deteriorated over the years along with his health.

Sunil Gavaskar had assured assistance to Kambli at Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial inauguration in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park in December last year. He has kept his promise, providing his fellow Mumbaikar and former team mate a regular stream of income.

The two also crossed paths earlier, at Wankhede Stadium in January this year when the ground celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was a timely reminder of their long-standing relations in Mumbai’s cricketing circles.

Kambli’s life hasn’t been a bed of roses on the personal front either. His wife, Andrea Hewitt, spoke about it during a podcast interview with journalist Suryanshi Pandey. She stated she had filed for divorce in 2023, but withdrew it once she saw how much Kambli depended on her.

“He’s childlike,” Andrea said. “I didn’t want to walk away knowing he might not eat or take his medicines. I had to stay. He needs me.”

Kambli, who played 104 ODIs and 17 Tests for India, often tends to be remembered more as the childhood friend of Sachin Tendulkar and an explosive left-handed batter at his peak. His fall from sporting heights to personal hardship is a reminder of how short-lived fame is.

Now, thanks to Gavaskar, he’s also got a lifeline — and a little more stability to lean on.
