Chennai Super Kings rock bottomed on Friday night, going down 8 wickets to Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2025 clash at Chepauk Stadium. The MS Dhoni-led side had scored their lowest-ever home total of 103-9, which KKR steamed past with nearly 10 overs left to play. It was a night to forget for CSK fans, who can see their team spiralling to the fifth straight loss of the season, while KKR bounced back.
CSK’s batsmen were up against a fiery bowling attack from KKR as the match started. Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers mesmerizing with his off-breaks to pick important three wickets. CSK’s powerplay was painfully slow, ticking over at a snail’s pace as they inched to their miserable total. It wasn’t even a bad day — it ranked as the third-lowest score in the history of the I.P.L.
Kolkata, however, didn’t wait to fight back. Narine traded his bowling exploits for a blistering 44 from only 18 deliveries, smashing five sixes and two fours. KKR chased down the total in a mere 10.1 overs with his explosive knock, leaving Chennai shell-shocked. The victory took Kolkata to third on the IPL table, CSK in ninth, 10 teams in the fray.
Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth went for broke on X, savaging CSK’s performance, saying that this ranks among their worst defeats of all time, and slamming their cautious batting and outdated approach. “The entire squad looks like it’s powered by nostalgia,” he posted, even asking CSK to take a punt on players who went unsold in the auction, like Prithvi Shaw, to add some spice to the camp.
One of CSK's worst defeats ever. Powerplay batting looked like a rehearsal for a test match. Whole XI feels like it's running on nostalgia. Time to think out of the box, why not try isome unsold players like Prithvi Shaw at this point? Would you try it? , even chaos is a…

For the loyal fans of Chennai, the defeat hurt. CSK, five-time champions, now have a massive task ahead them to turn around their season. KKR’s all-round performance, meanwhile, has made them look like genuine contenders. With Narine purring, they are one to keep an eye on as the tournament progresses.
